Saint Mamas was the Christian martyr who died c. 275 in Cappadocia. He preached to faunthe in the fields, & a lion remained using him when companion. Within iconography, his attribute is the lion. His feast day is 17 August in the Roman calendar and 2 September in the Orthodox calendar.
Around Cyprus he is popularly known as a patron saint of tax avoiders. Based on datthe from local legend he was a hermit living in super unfortunate circumstances & whilst a authorities tried to tax him, he evaded them. Soldiers were send & captured him however en route back to town, he saw the lion attacking the lamb, escaped a soldiers, economized the lamb, mount the lion's back & therein way come to town. His bravery earned him exemption from either revenue enhancement, hence his traditional attribute.
Morphou/Guzelyurt in Cyprus has a celebrated church dedicated to Mamas.
